PhD in Protein Biochemistry - Vascular Pathophysiology Lab, University of Oslo

University of Oslo, Oslo, Norway
Application deadline: 19 May 2019

Applications are invited for a 3-4 year position for a Research Fellowship as a PhD Candidate in protein biochemistry to be based in the Vascular Pathophysiology Lab (Head: Prof. Sandip Kanse) in the Faculty of Medicine, Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Department of Molecular Medicine at the University of Oslo. This group focusses on understanding the role of proteases in cardiovascular diseases such as thrombosis and stroke using biochemical, cellular and molecular techniques and in vivo mouse models.

The candidate will work on a project that is related to the structural analysis of proteases in blood using X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy. The main activities will consist of expression recombinant proteins and their purification, designing and expressing mutants and testing them in relevant assays. Finally, performing screens that will lead to the determination of protein structures using X-ray crystallography or cryo-electron microscopy. The aim is to understand activation and inhibition mechanisms of proteases at an atomic level. The project will be done in collaboration with the Oslo Structure Biology group.
