Postgraduate course of the FCEN-UB, August / September 2019

Overview

The objective of the course is for students to acquire advanced knowledge about cryo-electron microscopy (CryoEM) and single crystal X-ray crystallography (XRD) applied to the area of structural biology.

The course will introduce the problem of obtaining crystals, obtaining X-ray diffraction data of single crystals, structural determination through resolution, and subsequent refinement of crystallographic data. Crystallography is better equipped to provide high resolution dynamic information as a function of time, temperature, pressure and other perturbations, while CryoEM offers greater understanding when performing conformational and energetic mapping, especially as the algorithms to deconvolve the conformational heterogeneity become more advanced.
