Open position at Thermo Fisher Scientific available now, the Applications Scientist is an expert user of our products. You will be responsible for development of world-class methods and protocols for cryo-EM workflows in Life Sciences. You will apply these methods and protocols to support product development and marketing teams. Furthermore, you will build a network with the cryoEM community through collaborations with leading customers and help shape the future of cryoEM. You will support product development and plan, own and execute applications case studies with customers. This will require identifying relevant samples and defining new methods and protocols for cryoTEM workflows.

What will you do?

  • Develop and evaluate new CryoTEM applications and workflows. This will include preparing relevant samples, collecting and processing high resolution datasets for Single Particle Analysis (SPA), Cryo-electron Tomography (CryoET) and MicroED.
  • Work with academic and industrial collaborators and beta sites for establishing proof of concepts on new applications with our current and new products.
  • Communicate new applications results at scientific workshops, conferences and contribute to scientific publications.
  • Provide feedback to engineering and software development teams on system performance, new design features, new hardware qualification and advanced use-case problems for SPA and CryoET data collection.
  • Deliver marketing and sales collateral to the Product Marketing group for incorporation into marketing, sales training and supporting sales material creation.
  • Provide expert technical support and guidance to Sales and Service Divisions, R&D, Manufacturing, Product Marketing and other departments as required.

 

How will you get here?

This position is ideal for an experienced electron microscopist with a thorough familiarity of cryo-TEM operations, theory and technique. You will be able to “think out of the box” and would like to be engaged in a variety of complex and creative tasks. You will enjoy solving the most difficult and advanced technical challenges in SPA and CryoET data collection and processing techniques.

The ideal candidate will possess the following combination of education, experience and skills:

  • PhD degree or equivalent in Life Sciences, Structural Biology, CryoEM, Image processing, or X-ray crystallography. Equivalent would be to have a Masters or Bachelors Degree with extemsive and hands-on experience with cryoTEM or cryoSEM.
  • Demonstrated experience with sample preparation for cryoTEM or cryoSEM and knowledge of data collection and processing for single particle analysis and/or cryo-electron tomography.
  • Experience interacting with highly technical customers and the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to a variety of audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to systematically develop new and improved methods, protocols, troubleshooting techniques and operational optimization.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a diverse audiences.
  • Thrives in a dynamic team, can drive product improvement, and enjoys being exposed to a constant variety of complex issues that need to be resolved.
  • Willing and able to travel internationally up to 20%.
  • Able to build a customer network within academia and pharma industry.
