Jobs in Structural Biology and Related Fields

PhD Position

University of Durham, Durham, United Kingdom
Application deadline: 06 Feb 2014

A four-year integrated PhD position is open at the School of Biological and Biomedical Sciences at Durham University as part of the Newcastle-Liverpool-Durham BBSRC Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) on the biochemical and structural basis of sphingolipid biosynthesis of Toxoplasma gondii. The project is jointly supervised by Ehmke Pohl (crystallography) and Paul Denny (parasitology).

The aims of the structure are to elucidate the structure and function of the serine palmitoyl transferase (SPT) from T. gondii and related pathogens, and to determine the key roles of these enzymes in invasion and proliferation. SPT is responsible for the first and rate-limiting step in sphingolipid biosynthesis and hence an attractive potential target for new antibiotics. Further information can be found here.
