PhD Student Revealing the spatio‐temporal dynamics of Vaccinia virus host cell entry and genome release

Hamburg, Germany
Application deadline: 15 Apr 2021

The Heinrich Pette Institute ‐ Leibniz Institute for Experimental Virology (HPI), is committed to research on the biology of different human viruses as well as the pathogenesis of viral diseases. The HPI offers the opportunity to perform cutting‐ edge research in a world‐class research environment with excellent facilities.

They are seeking a highly‐motivated student to investigate the entry of Vaccinia virus by cryo‐ electron tomography (cryo‐ET). The project is a joint endeavor between the HPI research department ‘Structural Cell Biology of Viruses’ of Prof. Kay Grünewald and the group of Jacomine Krijnse‐Locker (Paul‐Ehrlich‐Institute, Langen). The Grünewald’s lab is located in the newly established Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB) on the Bahrenfeld‐Campus in Hamburg and has access to state‐of‐the‐art facilities. The successful candidate will employ cutting‐edge structural biology tools such as cryo‐ET and correlative approaches to unveil high‐resolution structures of functional entry intermediates mimicked in vitro with purified particles or directly inside infected cells.

Applicants should hold a master’s degree (or equivalent) in the field of structural biology, molecular life sciences, biophysics or similar. The position is available starting in May 2021 and is to be filled as soon as possible. Payment and social benefits will be in accordance with the regulations for the German TV‐AVH (salary agreement for public service employees).

The workplace will be located at the Centre for Structural Systems Biology. If you have further questions regarding the project or position please do not hesitate to contact Kay Grünewald directly (Email: kay.gruenewald@leibniz‐hpi.de).

The Heinrich‐Pette‐Institute promotes the professional equality between all genders. Handicapped applicants with equal qualifications will be given preferential treatment.

Please submit your application by April 15, 2021 to the Personnel Department, preferably by email. Late applications may be considered until the position is filled.
